In light of the advancement of the EU–Canada cooperation framework through the Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA), the conference explains and highlights the depth and breadth of the bilateral relationship. It will encourage the exchange of views between EU and Canadian stakeholders, offering an opportunity to raise awareness of EU positions and policies. There will be presentations and discussions by high-level government officials, academics and practitioners to explore the EU Canada Strategic Partnership.

The SPA reflects the joint commitment to uphold and advance democratic principles, human rights and fundamental freedoms, and to work together to strengthen international peace and security, and effective multilateralism. Through it, the EU and Canada cooperate on global economic issues of common interest, on sustainable development, on energy security and efficiency, on the environment, and on tackling climate change.

The event will be opened by H.E. Marie-Anne Coninsx, EU Ambassador to Canada and Canada’s Chief SPA negotiator, Ms. Alex Bugailiskis. There will also be a keynote address by Ms Edita Hrda, Managing Director, Americas, European External Action Service (EEAS) and closing remarks by Ms. Celina Caesar-Chavannes, Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Trudeau. There will also be two panel discussions taking place, one on the EU-Canada Relationship: Addressing Global Foreign Policy Challenges and the second on Global Cooperation on the Environment, Climate Change and Energy.

It will be an ideal occasion at which to demonstrate how EU-Canada strategic relations have evolved since 1976, and marking the special Europe Day celebrations.
